Voters form a new city in South Fulton County

A new city will form in Fulton County.

Residents decided Tuesday to approve the City of South Fulton, a signal that they would rather create their own government than be annexed into another. Much of the rhetoric surrounding the election related to annexations, and whether the area could withstand them if it remained unincorporated.

“We’re going to be part of somewhere,” voter Glemon English said. “Might as well be part of a new city. Why not try something new?”

Now, residents will take the steps to create the last new city that can be formed in Fulton County. With the City of South Fulton’s creation, all but a swath of land at Fulton Industrial Boulevard will be incorporated. The fight over that area will likely move to the state legislature when it reconvenes.

The City of South Fulton will include nearly 100,000 people in a jagged area that borders Cobb, Douglas, Fayette and Clayton counties.

“It’s time. It’s been time,” voter Patrick Cheney said. “We’ve been fighting this issue for a long time. The tax dollars are going to go more for your interests. Something just needs to be done. There’s a little more control with what’s going on.”
