Facebook reminds 6th District users to vote today

If you aren't sure if you live in Georgia's 6th congressional district -- and apparently many of you aren't -- you might want to check your Facebook account.

The increasingly ubiquitous social media network has rolled out a new feature to let users in the three-county congressional district know that today is election day.

A Facebook spokesman said the company has launched this new feature for local elections, although it has deployed it for national votes since 2008. The company last year used a similar feature to remind Georgians to register to vote ahead of deadlines.

The company spokesman said Facebook matches districts with its users based on location information and from "a variety of sources and civic engagement features we have launched in the last few months."

The company said a study in the journal "Nature" as well as its own internal research has shown these reminders can increase voter turnout.
