Georgia 2018: Jeffares picks up key allies in bid for No. 2 job

Republican Rick Jeffares' campaign for lieutenant governor picked up an important ally on Friday.

His fellow state senator Burt Jones said he'll be his campaign co-chair, flipping his support from Senate Pro Tem David Shafer.

“I worked closely with Rick in the Senate and he is one of those guys who just gets it," said Jones. "He knows what we need to do to make government smaller and work better for its citizens and he is going to be a great lieutenant governor."

His other campaign co-chair is Dr. J. David Allen, a dentist and member of the Georgia World Congress Center Board. His campaign finance chair is Aaron McWhorter, who is vice chair of the Department of Natural Resources board of directors.

Jeffares faces at least two other Republicans in next year's primary: Shafer and state Rep. Geoff Duncan. State Sen. Steve Gooch is also eyeing a run. No Democrats have announced yet for the job Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle is vacating, but several are exploring the possibility.
