Johnny Isakson’s newest campaign allies: ‘Angela and Phyllis’

Sen. Johnny Isakson’s campaign released a double-whammy on Wednesday: A coalition of veterans who have backed his re-election bid and a TV ad featuring two Georgia veterans who remind voters of his role as chair of the Senate’s Veterans’ Affairs Committee.

The feel-good ad, just five weeks ahead of his contest against Democrat Jim Barksdale, is a reflection of his campaign’s confidence in their November chances. Leading the polls by a healthy margin, Isakson is sticking to a decidedly sunny message.

The Veterans for Isakson coalition includes Ted Daywalt, the president of VetJobs, who said in a statement that Isakson “consistently fought for our rights and benefits and helped individual veterans when they had problems at the Department of Veterans Affairs.”

After a recent campaign shakeup, Barksdale has stepped up his attacks on Isakson, trying to more aggressively tie him to Donald Trump. And his campaign launched an ad in September targeting Isakson’s support for what he called “every bad foreign trade deal” since he was elected.
