Two rabies alerts issued for McDonough

Henry County Animal Care and Control issued rabies alerts Wednesday based on two instances this week in which raccoons tested positive for rabies in areas in close in proximity to each other.

On Monday, the department received calls on Monday and Tuesday that dogs had killed raccoons that tested positive for rabies, prompting the department to issue a 45-day rabies alert for:

- a half mile area aroudn Suffolk Way off Snapping Shoals Road in McDonough.

- for a half-mile area around the 200 block of River Road, also in McDonough.

During these alerts, residents in the area should make sure animals are up to date on their rabies vaccinations, administered by a licensed veterinarian. If not, the animals should be vaccinated as soon as possible. Residents should also monit the behavior of their pets and surrounding wildlife to see if they’re acting in an unusual manner.
