Georgia GOP gubernatorial debate set for Sunday, July 15

The two remaining Republicans in the race for Georgia governor are preparing for a live debate on Channel 2 Action News.

Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle and Secretary of State Brian Kemp will face off in a runoff debate from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Sunday, July 15, on Channel 2 Action News. The debate also will be livestreamed at that time on AJC.com. Plus, Monday's Atlanta Journal-Constitution will provide in-depth coverage of the debate.

Several Republicans were on the ballot for the May 22 primary. No candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote, so the top two candidates, Cagle and Kemp, made the runoff.

Cagle earned 39.01 percent of the vote while Kemp received 25.55 percent, according to the official report from the secretary of state’s office.

Channel 2 Action News anchor Justin Farmer will moderate Sunday’s debate.

Atlanta Journal-Constitution political reporter Greg Bluestein, Channel 2 Action News anchor/reporter Dave Huddleston and WSB Radio program operations manager Condace Pressley will join Farmer on the panel.

WSB-TV political analyst Bill Crane told Channel 2 Action News the runoff race has tightened considerably.

“Though there is not a great deal ideologically which separates these two men, their respective approaches to problem solving do differ,” Crane said. “Secretary Kemp has been making his appeal to supporters of the Second Amendment, and more recently to raising questions about alleged ethical issues with the lieutenant governor's leadership of the state Senate. No longer comfortably ahead by double-digits, Cagle has returned fire.”

The runoff election is Tuesday, July 24.

The winner will face Democrat Stacey Abrams in the general election in November.
