John Lewis endorses Sarah Riggs Amico for lieutenant governor

Democratic U.S. Rep. John Lewis endorsed first-time candidate Sarah Riggs Amico in her quest to become Georgia’s next lieutenant governor.

The civil rights icon and longtime Atlanta congressman called Amico a fighter.

“I first met Sarah and her young daughter at the March for our Lives in Atlanta,” Lewis said in a statement. “I realized then that Sarah is someone who walks the walk, not just talks the talk on important issues.”

It is not surprising that Lewis is endorsing the Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor.

Amico’s campaign released a statement announcing the endorsement Friday.

On Twitter, Amico thanked Lewis for his support.

“My entire family truly respects and admires him for his life's body of work, and for being an extraordinary human being,” she said.

Amico, a Marietta business executive, is facing former Republican state Rep. Geoff Duncan in November.

Lewis endorsed Stacey Abrams’ candidacy for governor last year, shortly after Abrams announced her intent to run.
